James F. Herrera, M.D.
Dr. Herrera has over 25 years of experience in Child, Adolescent & Adult Psychiatry in multiple treatment settings. Born and raised in northern Virginia, Dr. Herrera completed his psychiatry training at Harvard University and Children’s National Hospital and did undergraduate training at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Herrera specializes in treatment of ADHD, mood disorders (depression, bipolar depression), anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, developmental delays, autism, disruptive behavior (DMDD, ODD), trauma, adjustment disorders, school consultation and second opinions.
Dr. Herrera has a private practice in Mclean, Virginia and is the Medical Director of the Lourie Center for Social Emotional Wellness, a child development center in Maryland. The Lourie Center has been a leader in treatment, education and training for providers of care for children since its inception over 40 years ago by some of the fathers of American child psychiatry such as Stanley Greenspan, whose groundbreaking treatments for autism are still used today. The Lourie Center is nationally known for the treatment and education of children of all ages as it encompasses an Infant’s & Toddler’s Program, Early Head Start Programs, a therapeutic nursery and elementary school and is also a training center. Thus, Dr. Herrera always has to be up to date with the latest in neuroscience, psychiatry and psychology as he teaches and supervises many counselors, social workers, psychologists and child psychiatry residents. Dr. Herrera has learned from the Lourie Center model that a multidisciplinary team approach collaborating with therapists, psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, teachers and pediatricians and the families they serve is the only way to get a complete picture of the child or adolescent in order to get the proper diagnoses, treatment and the best outcomes. Thus, Dr. Herrera is committed to working with the child development collective of McLean Psychotherapy & Psychiatry where we have everything under one roof.
Dr. Herrera is embedded in the Northern Virginia community and has done consultations or talks for local private and public elementary, middle and high schools on child and adolescent wellness. When not working with children and adolescents, Dr. Herrera enjoys hiking with his family, cooking, scuba diving and Rueda salsa dancing.
