Cynthia Mathis is licensed as a Marriage and Family
Therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She
provides psychotherapy services for children,
adolescents, adults, and families, in addition to
facilitating social skills groups. Ms. Mathis
specializes in working with children and adolescents on
the autistic spectrum and with other developmental
delays. She also treats children and adults
struggling with sensory integration, anxiety,
depression, ADHD, divorce, sexual abuse, adjustment
disorders, and parenting and relational issues.
Her psychotherapy practice is designed to provide a
supportive environment for clients to increase
relatedness, develop positive coping skills, enhance
both emotional and social growth, and to improve family
and peer relationships. In working with clients,
Ms. Mathis uses her systemic training and employs a
variety of other treatment approaches to help clients
reach their goals, including psychodynamic,
cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, play and
expressive therapies, and the Greenspan DIR (Floortime)
model.Ms. Mathis also works to collaborate
with schools or other professionals clients may be
receiving services from to facilitate a positive
treatment outcome.
Ms. Mathis also employs two associates in her practice.
Colleen Baker is a Licensed Marriage and Family
Therapist. She has a Masters of Science degree in Marriage
and Family therapy from Virginia Tech and her Bachelor
of Science degree from Virginia Tech in Human
Development with a minor in Psychology. Ms. Baker
provides therapy services for children, adolescents,
adults, families, and couples. She has experience
treating depression, anxiety, substance abuse, marital
issues, autism and developmental delays, anger
management, parenting and relational issues, loss and
grief, and self-image struggles.
Sarah McElhaney is a Resident in both Marriage & Family Therapy and Counseling.
She has a Master’s of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia
Tech and two Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Northern Iowa in
Family Services & Psychology. Ms. McElhaney provides therapy services for children,
adolescents, adults, families, and couples. She has experience treating depression,
anxiety, marital issues, autism and developmental delays, anger management,
parenting and parent-child relational issues, and trauma.
